Mrs. Dunstan had heard the cry and was coming down the path. She had also heard Rob's question and Captain Jim's answer.
"All right, Son, run along," she called out.
"Don't get in the way of the men, and don't fall overboard."
Rob heard the first part of her words, but, before she had finished, he was running down the road after the big captain.
WHY ROB JUMPED OVERBOARD
When they reached the shore, most of the men had set off in their boats, and were trying hard to turn the great school of blackfish toward the land.
More boats kept going out from the shore to help in the work. Soon there was a long line of boats beyond the fish, driving them toward the shallow water.
All the time the men were shouting.

The boys who were old enough to be in the boats were told to make all the noise they could.
Rob was yelling at the top of his voice. Captain Jim steered the boat, while four strong men rowed it, splashing the water with their oars.
This shouting and splashing behind them frightened the blackfish and kept them swimming away from the boats.
Slowly the great school of fish was driven toward the land. Now they were moving along quietly,
"like cows" as the fishermen say, not even trying to break through the line of boats.
They had almost reached the shore,
when suddenly half a dozen blackfish turned and dashed for the open place between Captain Jim's boat and a smaller fishing-vessel that was next to it.
If these fish were not turned back toward the shore, the others would follow them, and the drive would fail.
