Granny Duncan was the oldest and kindest woman in the town.

"I think this is just a kind brownie," she said, "We will take Baby Jean to see him.

If she smiles at him, he is just a brownie.

For a baby always loves brownies and knows them at once."

So Baby Jean was brought, and she laughed and put out her tiny hands to the strange little man.

Then everyone grew very brave and crowded around the brownie.
