This time old Philemon took up the pitcher, for he was curious to see whether there was any truth in what Baucis had whispered to him.
這次老菲利蒙拿起牛奶罐，因?yàn)樗芎闷?，想看看柏西斯?duì)他悄悄說(shuō)的是否是真的。
On taking up the pitcher, he slyly peeped into it; he was sure that it did not contain a single drop.
一拿起牛奶罐，他就偷偷地往里看了看，他確定里面連一滴牛奶都沒(méi)有了。
But all at once he saw a little white fountain, which gushed up from the bottom of the pitcher and filled it to the brim with foaming and delicious milk.
但是突然，他看見(jiàn)一個(gè)白色的小噴泉從牛奶罐的底部涌出，并把牛奶罐裝滿(mǎn)了正泛著泡沫的美味的牛奶。
"Who are you, wonder-working strangers?" cried he, even more surprised than his wife had been.
你們是什么人？創(chuàng)造奇跡的陌生人嗎？他喊道，他甚至比他的妻子更驚奇。
"Your guests, my good Philemon, and your friends," replied the elder traveler, in his deep voice.

"Give me, also, a cup of the milk, and may your pitcher never be empty."

The supper being now over, the strangers asked to be shown to their place of rest;
晚飯結(jié)束了，陌生人要求看一看他們休息的地方；
and when Philemon drew Quicksilver aside, and inquired how under the sun a fountain of milk could have got into an old earthen pitcher, he pointed to his staff.
當(dāng)菲利蒙把水銀拉到一邊，問(wèn)在光天化日之下，牛奶噴泉如何進(jìn)入到那個(gè)舊的陶制牛奶罐時(shí)，水銀指向他的手杖。
"I can't tell what to make of my staff," said Quicksilver.
我不能說(shuō)我的手杖是怎么做的，水銀說(shuō)。
"It is always playing such odd tricks as this; sometimes getting me a supper, and quite as often stealing it away."
它總是這樣玩著奇怪的把戲；有時(shí)候給我準(zhǔn)備晚餐，并且經(jīng)常又把它給偷走了。
