“by+時間”意為“不遲于(=not later than)”;“一到(=as soon as)”;“當某時候到了[=when (the time indicated) comes]”;“到…時為止”等。時間上有過去、 現在和將來之別。主動詞本身有動作與狀態之分,其時態可為一般式、完成式、進行式或完成進行式。現分述如下:
1.“by+時間”與動作性強的動詞連用時,主句多用于完成式。by 后的時間可指現在、 過去或將來時間點。如: By the time he was fourteen years old, he had learned maths all by himself. 到14歲的時候,他就已經自學了數學。
但是,上述情況中當時間為將來時,主句動作發生在從句動作之后時,主句動詞可用一般時態。如:If you're not better by then, I'll take you to see the doctor. 如果到那時還不好些,我就帶你去看病。
2.“by+時間 ”與表狀態的動詞連用多用于一般式。by 后時間可為現在、過去或將來時。如: By the end of the century the population numbered about four million. 到世紀末人口已經達到四百萬左右。
如強調某狀態在某時間前已經完成,也常用完成式。如:By next Sunday you will have stayed with us for three months. 至下星期日為止,你將與我們相聚三個月了。
3.“by+時間”與祈使句連用,用于一般式。如:Please finish the task by the end of the month.請在月底前完成這項任務。
