238.Opening the Gates
238.開門
Jed stepped away from the work crew, put on a wool sweater and came over to take part in the weight lifting match. Several guys hesitated, but his entrance into the contest was within bounds. When he heard that, Mortimer stepped over and examined the rules without further ado! After reading it word by word he knew that they were right; Jed, a common worker and non-member of the club, could compete. Mortimer thought of withdrawing from the contest out of protest, but he decided not to. He was the favorite; he was not going to withdraw!
杰德離開工作人員，穿上羊毛衫，過來參加舉重比賽。幾個家伙有點兒猶豫，可是他來參加比賽是在適當范圍之內。聽到消息，莫蒂默走過來立即看了看比賽規則！一個字一個字地看過之后，他知道他們是對的：普通工人、非俱樂部成員杰德可以參加比賽。莫蒂默想過退出比賽以示抗議，但最后打消了念頭。他是最有希望的獲勝者，他才不退出呢！
Then the contest began. Words fail me to describe how amazed the members were that Jed did so well. With the exception of Mortimer they were all quite impressed. Mortimer was furious. He knew that with Jed in the contest he would really have to work at winning.
接著比賽就開始了。我無法用語言描述那些成員有多吃驚，因為杰德實在是太棒了。除莫蒂默之外，大家都留下了深刻的印象。莫蒂默憤怒了。他知道有杰德參加比賽，他得真的想辦法取勝。
When the final competitors were just Jed and Mortimer, Mortimer could see that Jed was wondering about what he would do with the winning money. Wishful thinking, he said to Jed. And then Mortimer stood up to lift his weights.
等到最后的參賽者只剩下杰德和莫蒂默，莫蒂默能看出來杰德正在想拿那些贏來的錢干什么。癡心妄想吧，他對杰德說。然后站起來開始舉重。
He struggled, but he succeeded.
他掙扎了一會兒，可是他成功了。
Then Jed lifted the same weights with flying colors! He even lifted them with his eyes shut! Mortimer began to get nervous.
接著杰德成功地舉起了同樣的重量！他甚至是輕而易舉舉起來的！莫蒂默開始感到緊張了。
On the next round Mortimer lost. Jed was the champion. Jed was the winner. It was within reason that Mortimer would congratulate Jed. He didn't give one sign with respect to Jed!
在下一輪比賽中莫蒂默輸了。杰德獲得了冠軍。杰德是勝利者。莫蒂默對杰德表示祝賀是合情合理的。可他沒有對杰德做出懷著尊重的表示！
As he left Mortimer turned and said something to everyone that they would always remember word for word!
他離開的時候，莫蒂默轉身對大家說了一些話，他們將永遠一字不改地記得這些話！
With the advent of a commoner winning this competition, you have opened the gates of your own demise!
“隨著貧民贏得這場比賽，你們已經打開了自己的死亡之門！”
Then Jed said, "With regard to your reputation for sportsmanship, let it be known that you have none!"
接著杰德說，“就你在運動家品格方面的名聲而言，讓大家知道你欠缺得很厲害吧！”
