237.激流勇退
When Jeremy returned from winter vacation he acted as if he could wipe the floor with anyone. He even stopped coming to orchestra where he played a wind instrument. When he said that he would have none of us for friends anymore I approached him!
過完寒假回來杰里米表現得好像可以打敗任何人。他在管弦樂隊演奏管樂器，這會兒他甚至都不來了。他說他不再接受我們做朋友，我跟他進行了一次談話！
What happened to you? I asked. "You used to be our friend. Now you wind up coming home from winter break a different person!"
“發生什么事啦？”我問。“你曾經是我們的朋友。現在你寒假回來，結果變了一個人！”
He just smiled.
他只是笑了笑。
Wipe the smile off your face and tell me what happened!
“你別笑，告訴我發生了什么事！”
Why bother? he said. "You won't understand!" I frowned. "All right, I don't know whether or not it will matter, but here goes. I lived a wild life over winter break and discovered a will power that I never knew I had! It all happened while skiing. There were a bunch of hot shots that teased me the whole time. I challenged them to a race because I wanted to win a name for myself. They agreed and tons of people watched. I was terrified, but I raced. The other guy wiped out and I won by a neck! It turns out that all of his boasting was window dressing and I tore it down!"
“何必呢？”他說。“你不會理解的！”我皺起了眉頭。“好吧，我不知道是否會有問題，可我還是說了吧。寒假期間我過著自由的生活，發現了一種毅力，我以前不知道我有這種毅力。一切都發生在滑雪的時候。一幫自命不凡的人一直在奚落我。因為想出名，我跟他們挑戰進行一場比賽。他們同意了，許多人觀看了我們的比賽。我很害怕，可我還是比了。另外那個家伙完蛋了，我以些微之差險勝！結果證明他吹的牛都是弄虛作假，我把真相大白于天下！”
Jeremy stood proudly as he told the story.
講述的時候杰里米驕傲地站著。
"It made me a different person. I felt wise immediately after the event! What was even better was that afterwards this beautiful girl came up to me and asked me if I wanted to go to coffee with her! I only answered 'White or black?' It was so cool!"
“這件事改變了我。我感覺我是事后聰明！更讓人高興的是事后這位漂亮姑娘走到我面前問我是否想跟她去喝咖啡！我只回答說要不要加點兒奶？真是太酷了。”
"Anyhow，now I'm a different person. I'm wide awake! And I don't want to hang out with you nerds anymore!"
“無論如何，我現在變了。我完全解了！我不想再和你們這幫蠢家伙鬼混了！”
Then he walked away. I just shook my head. Jeremy had become that which we all hated!
然后他就走了。我只是搖了搖頭。杰里米變成了我們都不喜歡的那種人！
