162.在屋里
John's heart was on fire as they walked into Ursula's old home.
約翰走進厄休拉那個老家時心里非常激動。
He had been there on occasion when he was young, but now it was so broken down.
小的時候，他偶爾來過這里,而現在這所房屋已經破舊不堪。
Ursula was on her way to put some tools on order to fix it up when she saw him, she said.
見到他的時候厄休拉正準備訂購一些工具把房子修好，她說。
Then John went in to greet Ursula's ailing mother. She smiled and remembered his name.
接著約翰進去與厄休拉生病的母親打招呼。她笑了，想起了他的名字。
But she didn't get up; she was on her last legs, she said,
但沒有起來，她說她快死了，
ever since she had injured herself when riding through some woods on horseback!
自從在森林里騎馬受傷之后她就在死亡線上掙扎！
Now she could hardly get up on her feet anymore on her own.
現在她幾乎不能靠自己站起來了。
And she missed the feeling of standing on land! But that was now her lot-to stay in bed.
她很懷念站在地上的感覺！可現在她就是那種命——躺在床上。
She was just glad that he was on hand to see her one more time and she hoped he'd stay for dinner.
她很髙興他到場再看她一次，并希望他留下來吃晚飯。
John smiled and agreed. That was what he was hoping for too!
約翰笑著答應了。他也希望留下來吃晚飯！
Back in the living room, John was on edge again. He didn't know what to say.
回到起居室，約翰又變得緊張不安起來。他不知道該說些什么。
"My wife died two years ago!" he said.
"我妻子是兩年前去世的！"他說。
"I heard." Ursula replied. "I almost called you several times, but my life has been so on hold because of my mother.
"我聽說過。"厄休拉答道。"我差不多給你打了好幾次電話，可由于我母親的原因我的生活很受限制。
I wanted to call you on my own time in my own way! But this is nice-seeing you like this, in the old neighborhood!"
我想在業余時間以我自己的方式給你打電話！不過這樣也好——在老居民點這樣見到你！"
"I said earlier that I was on my way back from work，" John said.
"我早說過我正在下班回來的路上，"約翰說。
"And that's true! But I really came to see you again! I found out yesterday that you were still living here!"
"我說的是真話！但我真的是來看你的！我昨天才弄清楚你還住在這里！"
"I'm glad!" she replied. "C'mon, let's talk more in the kitchen.
"我很高興！"她回答道。來吧，我們到廚房繼續聊。
I have to find something nice to get ready for dinner!"
