140.The Loss of Scruffy
140.斯庫(kù)菲失蹤了
When Carl left his dog, Scruffy, alone with his brother, Greg, for a moment in the park, Scruffy took off! Carl was so angry.
當(dāng)卡爾讓他的狗斯庫(kù)菲與他的弟弟格雷格在公園里獨(dú)自呆一會(huì)兒的時(shí)候，斯庫(kù)菲突然跑了！卡爾非常生氣。
He knew that he should never have left something up to Greg!
他知道他壓根兒就不應(yīng)該讓格雷格決定任何事情！
Now Carl had to find Scruffy and he would leave no stone unturned.
現(xiàn)在卡爾得找到斯庫(kù)菲，他準(zhǔn)備千方百計(jì)也要把它找到。
Scruffy didn't leave behind an easy trail. Once he was out of the park and in the city it was as if no one ever saw him again.
斯庫(kù)菲沒(méi)有留下明顯的痕跡。一離開(kāi)公園，進(jìn)到城里，好像就沒(méi)有人再見(jiàn)過(guò)它。
The efforts of the animal control center left much to be desired, however, so Carl left for the streets on his own!
而動(dòng)物管理中心所做的努力又不盡人意，因此卡爾自己去大街上找去了。
Greg knew that he had to help, even though Carl left him out of his plan to find Scruffy.
格雷格知道他得幫忙，盡管卡爾尋找斯庫(kù)菲的計(jì)劃中沒(méi)有安排他什么事。
But Greg couldn't let it be, he started looking as well. They both looked everywhere.
但格雷格不能就這樣呆著，他也開(kāi)始找了起來(lái)。他們倆到處都找遍了。
When they bumped into each other the next day in front of the lecture hall Carl yelled at Greg again for helping.
第二天他們?cè)谥v座大廳前偶然相遇時(shí)，卡爾又對(duì)格雷格吼了起來(lái)，說(shuō)他多管閑事。
"Just leave well enough alone, okay? I'll find him myself. Scruffy would probably hide from you anyhow!"
"不要幫倒忙，行嗎？我自己會(huì)找到的。斯庫(kù)菲可能見(jiàn)你就躲哩！"
But it was Greg who finally found Scruffy. He was left on the doorstep of a Catholic Church.
但是最后還是格雷格找到了斯庫(kù)菲。它被人扔在了一座天主教堂的臺(tái)階上。
Someone had obviously been beating on Scruffy and he was left for dead.
很顯然它被人打了，最后被認(rèn)為已死而被丟棄。
All that was left over of Scruffy's former nice fur was a bare patch on his back! It was sad!
斯庫(kù)菲原來(lái)的毛漂亮極了，現(xiàn)在背上只剩下光禿禿的一片。這太讓人傷心啦！
"Leave him alone!" Carl cried when he finally saw Scruffy. "Were there any witnesses when you got here?" he asked.
"別碰它！"看到斯庫(kù)菲卡爾喊道。"你到的時(shí)候這里有任何證人嗎？" 他問(wèn)道。
"No one!" Greg said. "But I'll leave some contact information around in case anyone wants to call!"
"一個(gè)也沒(méi)有！"格雷格說(shuō)。"不過(guò)我會(huì)留下一些聯(lián)系方式以備有人打電話！"
But no one ever did. Scruffy died the next day!
可是沒(méi)有一個(gè)人打電話。斯庫(kù)菲第二天就死了！
