72.胖瘦輪流轉(zhuǎn)
Mary was always easy on the eyes. But she was dull as ditch-water.
瑪麗總是美麗動(dòng)人。但她極其單調(diào)乏味。
And she ate like a horse.
而且她吃得很多。
It therefore wasn't long after high school that she gained so much weight that she could hardly move, let alone earn her own living.
因此髙中畢業(yè)不久她就胖得走不動(dòng)了，讓她自己謀生就更別提了。
Her old boyfriends were shocked!
她原來(lái)那些男朋友都很驚訝！
Most had been eager beavers to be with her in high school.
在髙中的時(shí)候，多數(shù)男孩都對(duì)她竭力討好。
Now they avoided her like the plague.
現(xiàn)在他們卻像躲瘟疫一樣躲著她。
They didn't even want to pass by her dwelling place for fear that she would call from her window and they would have to talk to her.
他們甚至都不愿意從她的住處經(jīng)過(guò)，擔(dān)心她會(huì)從窗戶叫他們，而他們得跟她說(shuō)話。
"Easy come, easy go!" Mary told herself.
"來(lái)時(shí)容易去時(shí)快！"瑪麗對(duì)自己說(shuō)。
But one time, early in the day, when she couldn't get out of bed due to her weight, she knew that she had eaten up too much food.
可是有一次，那天時(shí)間還早，她由于太胖起不了床，她知道她吃光了太多的食物。
Now she couldn't even get herself into a car, let alone eat out!
現(xiàn)在她連上車都很費(fèi)勁，更別說(shuō)去飯店吃飯了！
She decided then and there that she needed to stop eating like a pig and go on a diet.
此時(shí)此地，她決定她有必要停止狂吃海喝并且開始節(jié)食。
That was easier said than done.
這事說(shuō)時(shí)容易做時(shí)難。
Her old boyfriends only mocked her, saying she would never be the beauty she once was.
那些原來(lái)的男朋友只會(huì)嘲笑她，說(shuō)她永遠(yuǎn)都不會(huì)變回過(guò)去的美人兒。
Mary decided to make them eat their own words.
瑪麗決定讓他們承認(rèn)說(shuō)錯(cuò)了。
Six months later, after being hardly seen at all, a beautiful, slim Mary walked into the old hangout.
在六個(gè)月的銷聲匿跡后，一個(gè)漂亮而苗條的瑪麗在過(guò)去經(jīng)常出沒的地方出現(xiàn)了。
All the old boys came up to her amazed and suddenly interested again.
所有那些男孩都過(guò)來(lái)套近乎，他們不僅大吃一驚，而且馬上又來(lái)了興趣。
Mary swore at them and then left town forever, never to return.
瑪麗罵了這幫人，然后永遠(yuǎn)離開了，她再也不會(huì)回來(lái)了。
She was sure happiness would be found in another town. She was wrong!
她相信她能在另外一座城市找到幸福。可是她錯(cuò)了！
Though she may be thin and beautiful again, she was still as boring as ever!
盡管她現(xiàn)在又變得既苗條又漂亮，她還是像原來(lái)那樣單調(diào)乏味。
