The death of US former president Jimmy Carter will constitute a rare event in America: a state funeral.

Public observances honoring Carter's legacy will be held in Atlanta and Washington, DC, followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia, according to the Carter Center.

"To honor a great American, I will be ordering an official state funeral to be held in Washington, DC," President Joe Biden said in a statement Sunday after honoring the life of Carter.

The schedule for Carter's state funeral will be released by the Joint Task Force - National Capital Region, which has detailed the history and traditions of state funerals. The Joint Task Force says "a state funeral is a 7 to 10 day event and consists of three stages," which include ceremonies in the former president's home state, ceremonies in Washington, DC, and ceremonies in the state where the former president would like to be interred — in Carter's case, in Plains, Georgia.

President Joe Biden in remarks Sunday called former president Jimmy Carter, a "remarkable leader" and a "dear friend."

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has died at age 100. Carter was "surrounded by his family" at his home in Plains, Georgia, in his final moments, the Carter Center said in a statement Sunday.
