Off the southern coast of San Mateo County, Año Nuevo State Parksupports the world's largest mainland breeding colony for northern elephantseals. From December to March, up to 10,000 seals turn up, making the beach sodensely populated that it resembles a blanket of lumpy, brown fur. Moms givebirth to precious pups while bulbous-nosed bulls fight for their right to mate.Reality TV pales in comparison to this drama. Naturalist-led walks are offereddaily from December 15 through March 31 (except holidays). Best to makereservations; it's the only way to see the seals during this period. The parkis closed December 1–15 as pregnant females and bulls arrive and form harems.
