冰島首都雷克雅未克，冰島語意為“冒煙的城市”。傳說公元9世紀人們來此定居時，遠遠就看到岸上升起裊裊“白煙”，便誤把溫泉里蒸騰的水氣認作煙霧，因此得名。由于地熱能為其工業提供能源，所以人們在這里看不到其它城市常見的鍋爐和煙囪。雷克雅未克天空蔚藍，市容整潔幾乎沒有污染，故有“無煙城市”之稱。
