【重點講解】
1. 電訊發達的年代：an age of developed telecommunications。注意telecommuni-cations為復數。
2. 嚴重萎縮：即‘越來越少、越來越不普遍’，譯為is becoming less and less common。
3. 照樣：即‘像以前一樣、仍然’，譯為still。
4. 四月里，南方的天氣很好：“April in the south was fine.” 或 “It was fine in April in the south.”。
5. 我分別寫了五件事情：即‘我寫了五封信，涉及五個話題’，I wrote (five letters) on five topics。注意這里介詞用on，就像我們比較熟悉的用法：a book on Chinese culture（一本關于中國文化的書）。
6. 用老年人喝下一杯濃茶的那種速度：at the speed that aged people sip a cup of strong tea，這里的動詞‘喝’譯成sip，較形象地描述了老年人一口一口慢慢品茶的情景。
7. 有軌電車：streetcar。
8. 在黃昏里環繞城市：即‘在黃昏時分繞著城市走’，gliding around the city at the dusk。glide：悄悄地走。
9. 古人：people in ancient times。注意times用的是復數。
10. 緊急到火燒眉毛：即‘十分緊急’，譯為extremely urgent或pressing。‘火燒眉毛’是修飾緊急的程度，譯文extremely urgent已有所表達，故不用逐字逐句地翻譯。由于兩種語言的差距，翻譯中有時也不得不舍棄中文里一些十分形象的文字。
11. 用快馬輪換著送信：即‘用騎快馬、在驛站更換馬匹的方式送信’，by way of riding horses and changing them at courtier stations。
12. 馬鼻子里的氣息：horses' winded breath。
13. 今天也有緩慢優雅的事情：即‘今天也有不用著急去做的事情’， “Nowadays some things do not need to be rushed.”。
14. 幾句不重要的話：inconsequential message。
15. 讓它們散淡地跟著帆布口袋走在漫漫路上：如果不知道‘帆布口袋’是郵局裝信的郵包，這句話就不好理解。譯文則把這句話從邏輯上補充完整了。
