Putin criticizes attempts to rewrite war history

Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken of the dangers of rewriting the history of World War Two, at a meeting in Moscow to organize events to commemorate 70 years since the end of the war. He pledged to defend the contributions made by the Soviet people.
"Unfortunately today we see attempts not only to change and distort the results of World War Two, but also cynical uncovered lies, blatant slander addressing a whole generation of people who sacrificed everything for this victory and defended peace in the world," Putin said.
Putin said distorting the war history also aims at stripping Russia of its status as a victor country, as well as the corresponding international and legal rights. He was chairing a meeting to organize Russia's upcoming Victory Day celebrations in May, which he said also bears significance in education and publicity. Russia has invited the leaders of many countries to attend the events. And so far, leaders of more than 30 countries and international organizations have confirmed their presence.
