Nails in the Fence
籬笆上的釘子
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.
從前有一個小男孩脾氣很壞。他的父親給了他一包釘子，告訴他，每當(dāng)脾氣失控時，就在籬笆后面釘一枚。
The first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
第一天，小男孩往籬笆上釘了37根釘子。接下來的幾個星期，他逐漸學(xué)會了控制自己的情緒，每天釘入籬笆的釘子日漸減少了。他發(fā)現(xiàn)，控制情緒比在籬笆上釘釘子要容易得多。
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed by and the boy finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.
終于有一天，他一次脾氣也沒發(fā)。他告訴了父親。父親建議他在能夠支配情緒的日子里，每天拔下一枚釘子。時間一天天過去，小男孩終于可以告訴父親釘子全部拔完了。
The father took his son by the hand and led him to the hence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the hence. The hence will never the same. When you say something in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many things you say I'm sorry the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one."
父親牽著兒子的手領(lǐng)他來到籬笆前。他說：“兒子，你做得很好，可是你看看籬笆上的洞。這面籬笆再也不能恢復(fù)到以前的樣子了。當(dāng)你生氣而出口傷人時，你的言語就像這些釘子一樣，在人們的心中留下疤痕。你在別人身上插了一刀再拔出來，即使你再怎么道歉，傷痕依然存在。因為言語的傷害和肉體的傷害一樣，都難以恢復(fù)?！?/p>
