早年生活
原名保羅的波諾出生于愛爾蘭都柏林，是家里的第二子。有一名兄弟諾曼 (Norman)，當郵局職員的父親包伯·休森（Bob Hewson）是名天主教徒，母親艾芮絲（Iris）則是新教徒，兩人間宗教互異的婚姻在當時的愛爾蘭是非常少見的。保羅本人被母親作為新教徒養大，但是因為小時候的頑皮行徑，被街坊鄰居稱作“小反基督徒”。因為家庭的特殊，以及都柏林當時的社會經濟情況，按照他自己的說法，他是在一個充滿輕微暴力的中下層環境中長大，周圍的孩子會因為與眾不同而和他打架。他也必須坐公車去比較遠的都柏林教堂山高中（Mount Temple High School）上課，那是愛爾蘭第一所合一學校。這所學校同時招收天主教徒和新教徒的孩子。
