我國有一句古話:“智者千慮，必有一失。”智者千慮訂出的計劃，英文可以叫做the best-laid schemes of mice and men（老鼠和人所訂最周詳的計劃）。到底周詳的計劃跟老鼠有甚么關系呢?

原來這成語出自蘇格蘭詩人朋思（Robert Burns,1759-96）的《致老鼠》（To a Mouse）詩。詩人說老鼠的冬窩毀了在農夫犁下，又說:But,Mousie,thouare no thy lane/In proving foresight may be vein:/The best-laid schemes o'miceand men/Gang aft agley.（但是，老鼠啊，證明深謀遠慮可能只是白費氣力的，不只是你。老鼠和人所訂最周詳的計劃，都往往出錯。

現有，人們就用the best-laid schemes of mice and men gang aftagley（或oft go astray）來說最周詳的計劃也會出錯。
