《忽必烈汗》是一首僅有54行的詩。這是個(gè)充滿了東方情調(diào)的夢。據(jù)作者說，一日因身體不適，飲了一點(diǎn)鴉片酊，當(dāng)時(shí)他正在讀一篇有關(guān)忽必烈建造宮殿的游記，沒讀完就因藥物發(fā)作而睡著了。在夢中，夢見自己寫了二三 百行詩，醒來后記憶猶新，便趕緊抄錄下來，但寫到54行時(shí)，一位客人的到 來把他打斷了，之后不復(fù)記得其余的詩行。這首夢幻性的詩被最優(yōu)秀的批評(píng) 家認(rèn)為是最精美的。詩中有亞洲的大汗、地下圣河、陰冷的大海、森林、有圍墻和寄望塔的宮殿和御花園，還有操琴的非洲姑娘以及啜飲甘露和天堂的靈感之泉的詩人。在這首詩中，詩人用他的想象力把這一切融合在一起。
Amid whose swift half- intermitted burst
在它那斷時(shí)續(xù)的涌迸之間，
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
巨大的石塊飛躍著象反跳的冰雹，
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:
或者象打稻人連枷下一撮撮新稻；
And'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
安樂的宮殿有倒影，
Floated midway on the waves;

Where was heard the mingled measure
這兒能聽見和諧的音韻
From the fountain and the caves.
來自那地泉和那巖洞。
It was a miracle of rare device,
這是個(gè)奇跡呀，算得是稀有的技巧，
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
陽光燦爛的安樂宮，
A damsel with a dulcimer
連同那雪窟冰窖!
In a vision once I saw:
有一回我在幻象中見到,
It was an Abyssinian maid,
那是個(gè)阿比西尼亞少女，
And on her dulcimer she played,
在她的琴上她奏出樂曲，
Singing of Mount Abora.
歌唱著阿伯若山。
Could I revive within me
如果我心中能再度產(chǎn)生
Her symphony and song,
她的音樂和歌唱，
To such a deep delight ‘twould wiff me,
我將被引入如此深切的歡欣，
That with music loud and long,
以至于我要用音樂高朗而又長久
I would build that dome in air,
在空中建造那安樂宮廷，
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
陽光照臨的宮廷，那雪窟冰窖！
And all who heard should see them there,
那誰都能見到這宮殿，
And all should cry, “Beware! Beware!

His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
他飄動(dòng)的頭發(fā)，他閃光的眼睛！
Weave a circle round himthrice,
織一個(gè)圓圈，把他三道圍住，
And close your eyes with holy dread,
閉下你兩眼，帶著神圣的恐懼，
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
因?yàn)樗恢背灾蹣痈事叮?/div>
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
一直飲著天堂的瓊漿仙乳。
