塞繆爾·泰勒·柯爾律治（Samuel Taylor Coleridge）1772年10月21日生于英格蘭西南部德文郡一個鄉鎮牧師的家庭。9歲喪父，被送往倫敦基督慈幼學校上學，熟讀希臘、羅馬文學。19歲入劍橋大學，與騷塞相識。當時兩人都同情法國革命，但又都害怕革命暴力，于是設想去美洲建立烏托邦社會。計劃失敗后柯爾律治移居英格蘭部西部湖區，致力于寫詩，并與華茲華斯結成密友。他憎惡資本主義城市文明和冷酷的金錢關系，于是遠離城市，隱居于昆布蘭湖區，寄情山水或緬懷中世紀的宗法社會。他們創作出歌頌大自然的或美化宗法制農村生活方式的詩篇，以抵制丑惡的資本主義現實。因此被稱為“湖畔派詩人”。

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
忽必列汗在上都曾經
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
下令造一座堂皇的安樂殿堂:
Where Alph, the sacrecl river, ran
這地方有圣河亞佛流奔，
Through caverns measureless to man
穿過深不可測的洞門，
Down to a sunless sea.
直流入不見陽光的海洋。
So twice five miles of fertile ground
有方圓五英里肥沃的土壤，
With walls and towers were girdled round:
四周給圍上樓塔和城墻:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
那里有花園，蜿蜒的溪河在其間閃耀，
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;

And here were forests ancient as the hills,

By woman wailing for her demon-lover!

And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
巨壑下，不絕的喧囂在沸騰洶涌，
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,

A mighty fountain momently was forced:
