遠遠勝過某人或某件事物

《說岳全傳》說藩王柴桂跟岳飛爭做武狀元，比箭的時候，岳飛先射，第一箭就射穿了透箭靶，連射九箭，“俱從一孔而出”，柴桂不必下場就知道輸定了。美國人會說，Yueh Fei easily knocked the spots off Chai Kuei（岳飛輕易勝了柴桂）。

Knock the spots off直譯是“把點子打掉”，為甚么有“輕易勝過”的意思呢?這據說也是和射擊比賽有關的。參賽的槍手用紙牌做靶子，誰把紙牌上的紅點、黑桃之類點子打掉（Knock the spots off the card），誰就獲勝。所以，knock the spots off somebody/something等于“遠遠勝過某人或某件事物”了。

例如:

　　She has put several days of careful research into her report,which explains why it knocks the spots off everyone else's.

　　她這份報告，是花了好幾天仔細查考的成果，自然遠遠勝過別人的了。
