Many people think that dragons are not real.

Do you believe in dragons?

Well, dragons seem mysterious and wonderful.
嗯,龍看起來又神秘又奇妙.
So,I'd like to think they are real.Don't you agree?

I didn't before but I do now.

Why is that?

I saw a story about dragons on television.
在電視上我看到過一個(gè)關(guān)于龍的故事.
What kind of show was it?
是哪個(gè)頻道?
It was a nature show.All the stories were about nature.
是自然界頻道.所有的故事都慢有關(guān)于自然的.
Where do the dragons live?
這些龍都住在哪里?
On two islands in the South Pacific.
在太平洋南部的兩個(gè)島嶼上面.
Do they live in jungles?
他們是以叢林為生嗎?
No,they live in a hot,dry place with a few palm trees.
不,他們住在熱又有少量棕櫚樹又干燥的地方.
Are they friendly to people?

No.You must be very careful when you are near them.

I see.You know,my grandmother says that dragons lived in China long,long ago.

Really? How about you? Do you think she's right?

I'm not sure.Dragons were important in ancient China.

Lesson 14 2 Read THE DRAGONS OF KOMODO
14課 讀 科莫多龍
The sound of Li Hua's heart was nearly as loud as the waves of the sea.
李華心跳的聲音幾乎像海浪一樣響.
She was so excited that she couldn't speak.
她如此的激動(dòng)以至她說不出話來.
She wasn't deeply afraid like her mother.
她不像她的媽媽那么害怕.
She had decided to be brave like her father.
她下定決心像她爸爸那么勇敢.
Mr Li was sitting quietly in the boat.
李先生安靜地坐在小船上.
He saw the island getting bigger and bigger.
他看到的島嶼越來越大了.
At last,they reached the beach.
最后,他們到達(dá)了海灘.
Tian Feng,their tour guide,got out of the boat first.
田鳳,他們的導(dǎo)游,首先第一個(gè)走出小船.
Then she helped the others to get out.Li Hua jumped out.
然后幫助其他人出來.李華跳了出來.
Although there was a village on the island,
雖然在島嶼上有個(gè)村莊.
nobody was there to give them a warm welcome.
沒有人來熱烈地歡迎他們.
Before she left the holiday town of Bali,
在李華離開巴厘島的度假城之前,
Li Hua looked at a map of eastern Indonesia.
她看了印度尼西亞東部的地圖.
She saw that the Island of Komodo is small:no more than 280 square kilometres.
她看到的科莫多島嶼很小:不超過280平方公里.
It lies between two larger islands.It has many hills but little grass.
它位于兩個(gè)大的島嶼之間.它有許多小山,但幾乎沒有草.
Li Hua read that Komodo is a very dry and hot place most of the year.
李華通過閱讀知道科莫多是個(gè)干燥又熱的地方已經(jīng)很多年了.
From the beach,only a few palm trees could be seen here and there.
從海灘到這里,都處都能看到的只有很少的棕櫚樹.
But where were the dragons? Li Hua was eager to see dragons.
但龍?jiān)谀睦锬?李華很渴望看到龍.
Tian Feng told her to be patient.
田鳳告訴她要有耐心.
They ate a quick lunch,drank some water,and began to hike.
他們快速地吃完午餐,喝了一些水,又開始步行.
After a while,they came to some bushes.Tian Feng suddenly stopped

過了一會(huì)兒,他們來到了矮樹叢.田鳳突然停止不前.
Listen! Li Hua didn't hear anything.Look!She looked but saw nothing.
聽!李華沒有聽到什么?看!她看但沒看到什么?
The sun was shining very brightly,
陽光很耀眼,
so Li Hua put her hands over her eyes to see better.
所以李華把手放到眼睛的上面以便看得清楚一點(diǎn).
From behind the bushes something was moving.It was huge!
從矮樹叢的后面有什么東西在移動(dòng).它很巨大!
It was more than one metre high and nearly three metres long.
它超過一米高,接近有三米長.
Mr Li guessed it must weigh about 140 kilos.
李先生猜它可能有140公斤重.
Its yellow tongue was long and moved very quickly.
黃色的舌頭很長并且很靈活地移動(dòng).
So this was a real dragon!Just then Tian Feng told everyone not to move.
是一條真正的龍!這時(shí),田鳳告訴任何人不要?jiǎng)?
However,the dragon didn't notice them.It was looking at something else.
然而,這龍沒有注意到他們.它在看其它的東西.
Nearby,Li Hua saw a deer.It seemed to be ill and fell to the ground.
附近,李華看到一頭鹿.它看起來好像病了,躺在地上.
In the next moment,the dragon was running to the deer.
又過了一會(huì),這龍跑向這頭鹿.
It made a quick bite in the deer's leg and it was a poisonous bite.
很快地咬住了鹿的腿,這一口是致命的.
Soon other dragons came running to the deer, too.
很快其它的龍也奔向了那只小鹿.
While they were eating,the larger dragons kept pushing the smaller ones away.
當(dāng)它們吃的時(shí)候,這大龍趕走了它們.
Some of the small dragons were less than one metre long and no more than 20 kilos.
這些小龍沒有一米長,沒有20公斤重.
These little ones had to wait to eat.All dragons have very sharp teeth.
這些小龍?jiān)诘却?它們有鋒利的牙齒.
Li Hua closed her eyes.When she opened them several minutes later,
李華閉上了眼睛.過了幾分鐘,當(dāng)她睜開的眼睛的時(shí)候,
she didn't see any of the deer left.
她什么也沒看到有任何的鹿留下來.
