A GREAT MYSTERY

Easter Island is a great mystery.
復活節島非常神秘.
It is named Easter Island because it was found on Easter Day.

It is in the Pacific Ocean, 2,200 miles west of Chile.

On many parts of the island,there are huge robot-like stone statues called Moai.

No one knows for sure how the Moai came to be.

Some think that people from Peru made the Moai thousands of years ago.

and left them as some kind of message.

The island also has many kinds of rock carvings written in a kind of language

It is thought that at one time,

Then came people from other countries to the island

Many more people died and by the 1800s

there were only a little more than 100 islanders alive.

After Easter Island became part of Chile in 1888,the population increased.

Now there are about 2, 000 people living on the island.

People have started raising the Moai again,

even though no one knows why they are there.

Many people from all over the world come to see the Moai,

because they are such a mystery. No matter what the reason,

Rachel came into the classroom Monday morning and there was a note in her desk.

It said,if you want to have fun,meet me in room 306 after school.

Rachel looked around.She was the first one in the classroom.

No one else was there.After the first class,she showed the note to Jim and said,

"I'd like to know who sent me this note.Did you give it to me?

"Jim read the note and told Rachel that he hadn't written the note.

The next class began.Rachel had a difficult time listening to the teacher

because she kept wondering about the note.

She always cleans her desk before she leaves for home.

Yesterday she didn't see the note in her desk.

This morning,she wasthe first one in the class.

There was no one around,so how did the note get in her desk?

After class she asked Li Lei about the note.

He said that he hadn't written the note,either.

Rachel wasn't sure if she should go after class to meet this person.

Maybe it wasn't safe.At lunch she showed all her friends the note.
