Nobody knows how many different languages there are in the world.

It is said there are more than five thousand.

The most widely used of these languages is English.
最長用的是英語.
It is used all over the world.

It is the language of business,the sea and the air.
它是商業,航海,航空使用的語言.
It is used by business people,

by airline pilots and sea captains all over the world.

It is also the first language of sport and science.

So it is very important to learn English.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world,

but Chinese has the largest number of speakers.

Not only over one billion people living inside China

but also many Chinese outside China speak it.
而且中國以外的人也說中文.
You will find large or small groups of Chinese people
你將會發現或大或少的中國人
living in almost every country in the world.
生活在世界各地.
For example,in London or New York,

you will find several thousand Chinese people living and working there.

What are the official languages used in the United Nations?

There are so many different languages in the world
在世界上有那多種語言.
that people decided to use only six.
因而人們決定只選用其中的六種.
These languages are:Arabic,Chinese,English,French,Russian and Spanish.
這些語言是:阿拉伯語,中文,英語,法語,俄語,西班牙語.
Everything spoken or written in one language is translated into the other five,
以某一種語言說出和寫出的東西全部翻譯成另外五種語言,
so that everyone can understand.It is very important to learn English.
以便每個人都能理解.學習英語是很重要的.
But there are other important languages in the world, too

但世界上也有另一個很重要的語言.
Chinese is of course very important,especially in Asia.
中文當然是最重要的了.特別是亞洲.
Arabic is widely spoken in many parts of Asia and Africa,for example,in Egypt.
阿拉伯語是在亞洲和非洲的大部分地區最廣泛使用.比如,在埃及.
Russian is spoken in both Europe and Asia.
俄語在歐洲和亞洲也說.
French is widely understood,not only in Europe,

Spanish has a growing number of speakers all over the world,

Read the following passage about British English and American English

and discuss with your partner about the differences between them.

We often hear people say 'This is American English.

That is British English."Is American English very different from British English?

The answer is "no".

The differences between American English and British English are not very great.

Written English is about the same in both the UK and the US,

but there are some spelling differences.

For example,centre,colour and travelled is spelt center,
