It isn't a province,either.It's a region.

Xinjiang is unlike any other place in China.
新疆不像中國的其它地方.
It is larger and farther west than any other province or region in the country.
在國家里面,它大并且處在比其它的一些省或區域還要遠的西部
Although home to huge deserts,it gets water from more than 18,000 glaciers
雖然有些大沙漠,新疆卻可以從18,000多條河
and many rivers and lakes.More than half of the people living there are Uigurs,

who have a different way of life from other Chinese groups.Its capital is Urumchi,

Xinjiang is rich in oil and metals.

Luckily,for tourists and the people who live there,

Xinjiang has kept most of its beautiful things.

The days of caravans,however,have gone.

Still,a ride through the countryside will leave a good feeling on all who see it.

A:Have you heard of Turpan?

B:No,I haven't.

A:It's a city in Xinjiang about four hours by bus from Urumchi,

B:Hmm.Is it an interesting place?

A:Oh, yes. It is the second lowest place on earth.

It used to be called "The Land of Fire" because it is so hot in summer.

However,in winter it is very cold.

B:That's interesting.What else do you likeabout Turpan?

A:It has many bazaars.

It is a place for families and friends to talk and laugh and do business.

They sell delicious fruits,especially grapes and melons.

They also sell donkeys and goats.

You can find many colourful carpets and pottery,too.

B:Is there any other place in Xinjiang that interests you?

A:Yes, there is.I like Kashi,also known as Kashgar.

It is the westernmost city in China.It's also an oasis with markets.

But it isn't as hot as Turpan in summer because it's in the mountains.

Many people have heard of Tianchi in the Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang.
許多人聽說過新疆天山中的天池.
This beautiful lake is about 110 kilometres northeast of Urumchi.
這是個漂亮的湖,距烏魯木齊東北方大約110公里
It is about 3,400 metres long and 1,500 metres wide.
它大約有3400米長和1500米寬.
The water is clear and blue and shines in the sun.

Tourists usually come in summer.

They go boating,riding or walking along the lake.
