克里斯托弗·馬洛(Christopher Marlowe 1564～1593)，英國詩人，劇作家。1564年3月6日生于坎特伯雷一富有鞋匠之家，1593年5月 30日卒于倫敦附近的德特福德。1587年在劍橋大學獲碩士學位。在倫敦期間曾與探險家、政治活動家羅利，劇作家查普曼，數學家哈里奧特等懷疑宗教者結成團體，人稱黑夜派和無神論者。曾一度入獄。后被人刺死。馬洛革新了中世紀的戲劇，在舞臺上創造了反映時代精神的巨人性格和“雄偉的詩行”，為莎士比亞的創作鋪平了道路。
這首詩是英國文學詩中最優美的抒情詩。它繼承了田園抒情詩的風格。詩中牧羊人享受著鄉村生活，醞釀著對愛人的純潔感情。通過描寫戀人們在無塵世喧囂干擾的山野懷抱中生活，傳達了一段只可意會，不可言傳的真情。
