cross在英國常指代cross the English Channel，表示為“渡過英吉利海峽到法國去”。

【詞義辨析】
across, through, cross
都可表示“橫過”或“穿過”
across主要表示從某物的表面“橫過”，涉及“面”的概念。
My house is across the harbour，in the vicinity of the Kowloon Park．

They live across the Central Plaza.
他們住在中央廣場的對面。
Everyone shouts "kill it" when a rat is seen to run across the street．

【詞義辨析】
among, between, amid, amongst
這些前置詞均含“在……之間，在……之中”之意。
among指三者或三者以上的同類事物之間。
between多指兩者之間，但現代英語中也可指三者或三者以上，表示彼此間清楚的獨立的個體關系。
amid正式用詞，側重指在某個地方的中間或被某個東西包圍著或在非同類人中間。
amongst與among同義，是among的變體。一般說來among總能替代amongst,而amongst則不然。

Children must attend school between 5 and 16.
