【語法用法】
in case of指“假如……發生，以防……”。
Take an umbrella with you in case of rain.
帶把傘吧，以防下雨。
in the case of指“關于……”，偶爾與in case of同義。
In the case of his father, we must make an exception.
關于他的父親，我需要做個例外。
in the case of，in ...case和in many cases等表達方式都要避免使用過多，有時還可省略。
In the case of Russian grammar, it has six cases.
可以直接說Russian grammar has six cases，省略in the case of。
in case后加that從句指“假如……”或“希望”，從句中不用將來時態。
In case he comes, let me know.
You had better be ready in case they arrive before you expect them.
in case可獨立使用，表示“萬一”。
They may not arrive before you expect them, but you had better be ready in case.
他們可能不會在你預期的時間前到，但為避免萬一，你最好做好準備。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: In case of physicial change, no new substance is formed.
訂正: In the case of physicial change, no new substance is formed.
翻譯: 至于物理變化，沒有產生新物質。
分析: in case of“以防……”，而in the case of指“至于”。

二.alone：adj.單獨的, 獨自一人的, 孤單的 adv.獨自地, 僅僅
【語法用法】
alone，lone，lonely和lonesome的比較：
alone是表語形容詞，因此能說The man is alone，不能說an alone man。也不能說very alone，只能說much alone或very much alone，且后者比前者普遍。
lone是定語形容詞，因此能說a lone man,不能說The man is lone。
alone指“獨自的”，lonely指“寂寞的”，一個人也許alone但并不lonely（雖自己一人，但不寂寞），或是雖不alone而感覺lonely（雖不是自己一個人，卻還是寂寞）。有時lonely還指“不大有人到的”，如a lonely house。
lonesome同lonely意思相近，指“孤單的”。
Mary is very lonesome with her husband and children so much away.
She alone went指“只有她去”，She went alone指“她獨自去”。而leave him alone有時指“聽任他獨自一個人”，有時指“不干涉他”，let him alone指“不干涉他”；
let alone等于to say nothing of，指“更不用說，莫說”。
The house is uninhabitable in summer, let alone in winter.
這房子夏天都不能住人，更不用說冬天了。
【詞義辨析】
lonely, alone, desolate, lone, solitary
這些形容詞均有“孤單的，寂寞的”之意。
lonely強調孤獨感，含“渴望和他人在一起”的意味。
alone普通用詞，指獨自一人的狀態，有時含孤寂之意。
desolate語氣強烈，強調遭受損失和失去親人所帶來的難以忍受的痛苦。
lone較文雅，可與lonely換用。
solitary可指因被遺忘或遺棄而產生的孤獨感，也可指人的生性孤僻。
only, single, sole, unique, alone
這些形容詞均可表示“唯一的”之意。
only普通用詞，常可與sole換用，但側重僅限于指定的人或物，而不需要更多。
single語氣較強，強調僅此一個，再無第二個。
sole語氣強于only，指僅有一個或一群，只考慮這一個或這一群。
unique非正式用詞，側重在一類中唯一無可匹敵、無與倫比的特征。
alone著重專指某人或某物，而不是別的。
【例句用法】
I haven't decided on the menu yet, let alone bought the food.
我還沒決定吃什么菜呢，更不必說買好了。
You can't live on bread alone.
你不能僅靠面包維生。
I was alone in the classroom.
我獨自在教室里。
