break在口語中有“告知，透露”之意，如：break a story透露一則新聞。所以break sth. to sb.就是指“把某事告知某人”。通常指的是不好的消息或事件，有不得已而為之的成分在內。此外，break還可以物作主語，表示“被公開，傳開，被披露”，如：There was a public outcry when the scandal broke. 丑聞傳開後引起了公憤。
