hit本義為“打，擊打”，nail是“釘子”的意思，所以hit the nail on the head表面意思是“正打在釘子頭上”，比喻義就是“擊中要害，一針見血”，指說話正好說到了關鍵處，到了點子上。類似的說法還有hit the bull's eye，hit the mark。
