To save one's skin的意思從表面看來是：救了某人的皮。但是，實際的意思是：安全地逃出了危險的境地，沒有受到傷害。
例子："My son was in a bad auto accident last week. The other car went through a red light and smashed into him. It wrecked his car, but he was wearing his seat belt and that saved his skin -- he walked away without a scratch."
這句話的意思是：“ 我的兒子上星期在開車時發生了嚴重的車禍。那一輛車穿紅燈，然后撞上了我兒子的車，把他的車給撞壞了，但是因為他帶著安全帶，所以他一點都沒有受傷。”
