A travelling culture
Many people often refer to the Romany as 'travellers'.
In English-speaking countries, they are often called 'Gypsies' because of the belief that they first came from Egypt.
However, today it is not considered polite to use this term.
Their main characteristic is that they do not stay settled for a long period of time, and always move on to another place.
In the past they lived in carriages pulled by horses, but nowadays thay often use trucks or coaches.
They resist making permanent homes, and choose not to become citizens of the countries that they move to.
Instead, they prefer to stay in small groups, to protect and preserve their culture and freedom.
