How to Be True to Yourself
如何真實地表現(xiàn)自我

My grandparents believed you were either honest or you weren't. There was no in between. They had a simple motto （格言）hanging on their living-room wall: "Life is like a field of newly fallen snow; where I choose to walk every step will show." They didn't have to talk about it — they demonstrated the motto by the way they lived.

They understood instinctively that integrity （正直）means having a personal standard of morality （道德）and ethics （倫理）that does not sell out to expediency （自身利益考慮）and that is not relative to the situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately, integrity is in short supply today — and getting scarcer. But it is the real bottom line in every area of society. And it is something we must demand of ourselves. A good test for this value is to look at what I call the Integrity Triad （三位一體）, which consists of three key principles:

Stand firmly for your convictions in the face of personal pressure. There's a story told about a surgical nurse's first day on the medical team at a well-known hospital. She was responsible for ensuring that all instruments and materials were accounted for during an abdominal （腹部的）operation. The nurse said to the surgeon, "You've only removed 11 sponges, and we used 12. We need to find the last one."
在個人壓力面前要堅定自己的信念。有個故事，說的是一家著名醫(yī)院里的一名手術(shù)室護士，她第一天參加外科手術(shù)，其職責是在腹部手術(shù)過程中，確保所有醫(yī)療器械和材料的充分準備和安全使用。該護士對主刀大夫說：“你只取出來11塊海綿，而我們總共用了12塊，我們必須找到這最后一塊?！?/div>
I removed them all, the doctor declared. "We'll dose now."
“我全都取出來了嘛，”主刀醫(yī)生說，“我們要縫刀口了。”
You can't do that, Sir, objected the rookie nurse. "Think of the patient..."
“你不能這么做，先生，”那個護士新手反對說?！罢埬鸀椴∪讼胍弧?/div>
Smiling, the surgeon lifted his foot and showed the nurse the 12th sponge. "You'll do just fine in this or any other hospital," he told her.
主刀醫(yī)生微笑地抬起了腳，讓護士看那第十二塊海綿。他對她說：“你肯定會干得很出色的，不管是在這家醫(yī)院還是在別家醫(yī)院?！?/div>
When you know you're right, you can't back down.
