"There are many languages spoken by things," the boy said.

"There was a time when, for me, a camel's whinnying was nothing more than whinnying.

Then it became a signal of danger. And, finally, it became just a whinny again."

But then he stopped. The alchemist probably already knew all that.
他停住了，煉金術(shù)士應(yīng)該知道這一切。
"I have known true alchemists," the alchemist continued.
“我認(rèn)識(shí)一些真正的煉金術(shù)士，”煉金術(shù)士接著說。
"They locked themselves in their laboratories, and tried to evolve, as gold had.
“他們把自己關(guān)在實(shí)驗(yàn)室里，試圖使自己像金子一樣發(fā)展，
And they found the Philosopher's Stone, because they understood that when something evolves, everything around that thing evolves as well."
于是發(fā)現(xiàn)了點(diǎn)金石，因?yàn)樗麄冎溃?dāng)一個(gè)事物在發(fā)展時(shí)，它周圍的一切也會(huì)發(fā)展。”
"Others stumbled upon the stone by accident.
“有些煉金術(shù)士在偶然間得到了點(diǎn)金石。
They already had the gift, and their souls were readier for such things than the souls of others.
他們都有天賦，靈魂比一般人的警醒。
But they don't count. They're quite rare."
但這種人鳳毛麟角。”
"And then there were the others, who were interested only in gold.
最后，還有一些煉金術(shù)士，他們一門心思追求金子。
They never found the secret. They forgot that lead, copper, and iron have their own personal legends to fulfill.
這種人永遠(yuǎn)也發(fā)現(xiàn)不了其中的奧秘。他們忘記了，鉛、銅、鐵同樣也有需要履行的天命。
And anyone who interferes with the personal legend of another thing never will discover his own."
誰(shuí)若干涉其他事物的天命，誰(shuí)就永遠(yuǎn)發(fā)現(xiàn)不了自己的天命。”
The alchemist's words echoed out like a curse.
煉金術(shù)士的這些話如同咒語(yǔ)一樣回響在空中。
He reached over and picked up a shell from the ground.
說完，他彎腰從沙地上撿起一個(gè)貝殼。
"This desert was once a sea," he said.
“這里過去是一片大海。”煉金術(shù)士說。
"I noticed that," the boy answered.
“我已經(jīng)注意到了。”男孩回答。
The alchemist told the boy to place the shell over his ear.
煉金術(shù)士讓男孩將耳朵湊到貝殼上。
He had done that many times when he was a child, and had heard the sound of the sea.
小時(shí)候，男孩曾許多次這樣做過，這次他又聽到了大海的喧鬧。
"The sea has lived on in this shell, because that's its personal legend.
“大海仍舊在這只貝殼里，因?yàn)檫@就是它的天命。
And it will never cease doing so until the desert is once again covered by water."
大海永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)離開貝殼，直到沙漠重新被海水淹沒。”
They mounted their horses, and rode out in the direction of the Pyramids of Egypt.
然后，二人翻身上馬，繼續(xù)朝埃及金字塔的方向行進(jìn)。
