"We'd hear the sirens from the ambulances throughout the day and night, taking people to the hospital," says Carl.
By Feb. 16 at least 40 American passengers had been diagnosed with COVID-19, including Jerri Jorgensen;

But two hours into their flight back home on a U.S. Air Force cargo jet, Carl woke from a short nap and realized something was wrong.

"My fever only lasted about 12 hours," says Carl, whose only treatment has been ibuprofen for the fever and Gatorade for dehydration.
"That was it, because there's no cure for it. There are no antibiotics. My only other symptoms were a little tightness in my chest and a dry cough.”
While he must remain in isolation until he tests negative for the virus on three consecutive days, he is passing the time by pacing back and forth in his room.
"Every 14 steps I hit a wall, then I turn around," he says. “Yesterday l got 9,000 steps in.”
But he is also keenly aware that others were not as lucky.
In the weeks since he and Jeri left the Diamond Princess,
more than 700 other passengers (most of whom are from China, South Korea and Japan) have contracted COVID-19, and six have died.

“I’m lucky. I was never in critical condition,” says Carl.
"It came and went very quickly for me.
But it’s going to take weeks for everything we’ve been through to sink in."
