The Olmec left us very few clues.
But what they did give us is a powerful, in-your-face reminder
that, no matter where in the world,
when civilisations first made art,
they made it about us.
I want to explore why that is.
What were those early people doing this for?
What part did images of the body play
in the societies which first created them?
I'm not just going to be concentrating on the artists--
I want to take a different approach.
I'll be trying to see these bodies through the eyes of the people
who lived with them, used them, and looked at them.
And that's not all.
I want to show how one particular way
of representing the human body--
one that goes all the way back to ancient Greece--
became more influential than any other,
coming to shape our Western ways of seeing.
