In December 2010, I was standing with Pat Mitchell, waiting to go onstage to give my TEDTalk.

The day before, I had dropped my daughter off at preschool and told her I was flying to the East Coast so I wouldn't see her that night.

She clung to my leg and begged me not to leave.

I couldn't shake that image and, at the last minute, asked Pat if I should add it to my speech.

"Absolutely tell that story," said Pat. "Other women go through this, and you'll help them by being honest that this is hard for you too."
