Dialogue 1
Mark: Jingjing, have you heard anything from your friend, Meili?
Jingjing: You mean the one who went on a blind date a few months ago?
Mark: That's the one. Did she go out again with that guy?
Jingjing: Actually, they were seeing each other for a few weeks.
Mark: They were? It sounds like there's a good story.
Jingjing: Well, she was pretty happy with him. But he lost his job a few weeks after they started going out.
Mark: Huh? Did he get fired because of her?
Jingjing: No, nothing like that. Anyway, Meili's folks started getting curious about the guy, and they wanted to meet him. She kept putting it off in hopes that he'd find a new job first.
Mark: Right. It's hard for an unemployed guy to make a good first impression.
Jingjing: Exactly. But Meili's mom and dad arranged a dinner at a restaurant, so that they could set eyes on Gao Feng.
Mark: So, are they all squared away now?
Jingjing: Just the opposite. It was kind of a débâcle.
Mark: Really? Do tell!
Jingjing: You'll never guess what happened between Meili's father and Gaofeng.
Mark: Come on: just tell me!
Jingjing: No. I want you to guess. I'll go fill up my water bottle and you get ready to take a shot in the dark.
Mark: Oh, all right. See you in a few.

Dialogue 2
Jingjing: So, Mark, have you got a good guess ready?
Mark: You haven't told me anything about the dad, or much about Gaofeng. I don't have much to go on. Um, did Gaofeng make up a fake job and then get caught with his pants on fire?
Jingjing: If only it were that simple. Remember how Gaofeng got fired?
Mark: Yes. Did the dad know something about it?
Jingjing: He knew more than anyone, because he was the boss who let Gaofeng go!
Mark: Oh, that's terrible. Was he embarrassed?
Jingjing: Meili's father was a gentleman about it. I don't know what Gaofeng had done to lose his job. But, obviously, the dad-slash-boss had some doubts about whether or not Gao Feng could be responsible.
Mark: So, what was the verdict? Could Meili and Gaofeng still be an item?
Jingjing: They're keeping in touch. But they were asked to put their relationship on hold for a while, at least until Gaofeng can land another gig.
Mark: That's understandable. Are they taking it well?
Jingjing: I think so. Separation is a good test of passion between people. We'll see.
Mark: Ok. Well, don't forget to fill me in if there are any new developments.
Jingjing: Sure thing. I'd better get back to work now.
Mark: Thanks for the scoop!
