Birches, birches, birches. Even more birches. Yes, thousands of birches everywhere.
樺樹，樺樹，樺樹。還是樺樹。是的，到處都是數(shù)不盡的樺樹。
What is it about Umea and its passion for birch trees?
烏默奧及其對(duì)白樺樹的執(zhí)念？
And the residents of Umea, they use the birch for just about everything.
烏默奧人的生活處處離不開樺樹。
They use them for art, they are painted on art,
他們用它來作畫，把它涂在畫作上。
they become furniture, decorate houses, they color fabrics, make medicine of birch, glue and soaps, they make tea and mixed drinks.
他們把樺樹做成家具，用樺樹裝飾房屋，用樺樹給織物染色，治病，制作膠水，肥皂，抑或是泡茶，調(diào)成混合飲料。
Wait, what? Is that right? Drink birch？
等等，什么？真的嗎？喝白樺？
Even in the winter, when the birches are bare and ugly, they brighten up the town, but then, you have to go indoors to peak at them.
即便到了冬天樺樹變得光禿而丑陋，它們也依然照亮整個(gè)城鎮(zhèn)，只是到了那時(shí)，你需要躲在室內(nèi)看。
But why is everyone in Umea so crazy for birches?
那烏默奧人為什么對(duì)樺樹有如此深的執(zhí)念呢？
Given that it's winter most of year, wouldn't pines have been a more natural choice?
鑒于這里一年里的大部分時(shí)間都是冬季，難倒更自然的選擇不應(yīng)該是松樹嗎？
Okay, time for a trip back into history.
好的，是時(shí)候來講講歷史了。
Let's rewind to Umea in 1888.
讓我們將時(shí)光倒回到1888年。
Back then, the whole town was, more or less, built of wood.
那時(shí)，這里的家家戶戶幾乎都是用木頭建造的。
On June 25th, a fire broke out in the city's brewery.
6月25日，該市啤酒廠發(fā)生了火災(zāi)。
Gale force winds caused the fire to spread and grow to a disastrous size.

The whole town burnt down.

That sounds pretty brilliant, does it actually work?

Not everyone is impressed by these trees.

Lots of residents here suffer from pollen allergies, some so strong that they can't bare to go outside for parts of the year.

So, how do locals coexist with their city's symbol? Is there a solution to this problem?
