Tis better to be vile than vile esteem'd,
冰清玉潔反蒙不辯的沉冤，
When not to be receives reproach of being,
倒不如去作惡又不受惡名牽纏；
And the just pleasure lost which is so deem'd
所謂合法愛(ài)的快樂(lè)早已經(jīng)消失，
Not by our feeling but by others' seeing:
它徒投俗好，無(wú)視我們自身的情感。
For why should others false adulterate eyes
為什么別人的挑逗賣(mài)俏的目光
Give salutation to my sportive blood?
欲把我動(dòng)蕩不安的天性點(diǎn)燃？
Or on my frailties why are frailer spies,
為什么更脆弱的人要窺視我的弱點(diǎn)，
Which in their wills count bad what I think good?
我以為善者他們卻恣意稱(chēng)為卑賤？
No, I am that I am, and they that level
不，我就是我，任他們對(duì)我惡言相加，
At my abuses reckon up their own:
不過(guò)是暴露他們自己的丑惡嘴臉。
I may be straight, though they themselves be bevel;
他們可以彎腰駝背，我們卻要挺直腰桿，
By their rank thoughts my deeds must not be shown;
他們齷齪的思想豈可把我們的行為評(píng)判！
Unless this general evil they maintain,
除非他們堅(jiān)信這樣一種異端：
All men are bad, and in their badness reign.
全人類(lèi)都是壞蛋，作惡是他們的本錢(qián)。
