Dialogue 1
Mark: Jingjing, I need your advice about something.
Jingjing: Try me. What's up?
Mark: Well, a friend of mine is visiting Beijing. He wants to go see the Great Wall. I'm wondering which site to suggest.
Mark: He's a foreigner. Why would that matter?
Jingjing: Well, there seem to be different preferences.
Mark: What do you mean?
Jingjing: Chinese people like 八達(dá)嶺 (Bādálĭng). It's strong, and winds its way up a mountain.
Mark: When I went there, it was pretty crowded too.
Jingjing: Some foreigners like to see unrestored parts of the wall.
Mark: You mean the wild wall?
Jingjing: That's what it's sometimes called.
Mark: I'm afraid he'll get lost if I recommend a place that doesn't sell tickets.
Jingjing: Then your best bet is either 慕田峪 (Mùtiányù) or 金山嶺(Jīnshānlĭng).
Mark: I was going to recommend 慕田峪 (Mùtiányù). What can you tell me about 金山嶺 (Jīnshānlĭng), though?
Jingjing: I've got to go to a meeting now. If you can wait for me, I'll tell you in half an hour or so.
Mark: OK. I'll be here.
我在。
New words:習(xí)語短語
Try me. (Ask me something, and see how well I can answer.)
Why would that matter? 這有什么要緊的?(It shouldn't make a difference, should it?)
winds its way up 蜿蜒直上(curves and climbs, over hills)
unrestored 沒有修復(fù)的,沒有保存的(not repaired or maintained)
wild wall 野長城 (overgrown, totally natural)
Dialogue 2
Jingjing is back from her meeting.
Jingjing: You're still here!
Mark: Of course. I wanted to hear what you had to say about the 金山嶺 (Jīnshānlĭng) section of the Great Wall.
Jingjing: Well, for starters, it's a 5km section between two sites.
Mark: The whole section is called 金山嶺 (Jīnshānlĭng)?
Jingjing: No, that's just one end of it. The other end is called 司馬臺 (Sīmătái).
Mark: Which end is a good starting point?
Jingjing: I'd recommend starting at 司馬臺 (Sīmătái). It's easier to get back to Beijing from 金山嶺 (Jīnshānlĭng).
Mark: That's reason enough. Can the hike be done in a day?
Jingjing: Sure, it only takes 3-4 hours. But your friend could go there the afternoon before and spend the night.
Mark: Where should I recommend him to stay?
Jingjing: There's 古北 Gŭběi Water Town. I'll bet there are some hotels there.
Mark: OK. I'll tell him to check it out.
Jingjing: Are you going to go with him?
Mark: I wish! But I won't have the day off when he's in Beijing.
Jingjing: Too bad! You're going to miss out!
