The maker of a popular "selfie makeover" mobile app that lets users turn themselves into supermodels could soon give the Hong Kong stock exchange a facelift. Meitu Inc., a smartphone and app developer based in the eastern city of Xiamen, filed an application with the Hong Kong exchange for an initial public offering on August 20. The company hopes to raise between US$ 500 million and 1 billion through a listing on the exchange, which will likely happen in the fourth quarter of this year, insiders said.

The IPO could be the world's second-largest tech IPO this year after the Japanese communication app Line, according to the Wall Street Journal. But tech firms, including Chinese app giant Tencent, accounted for only 10 percent of the Hong Kong exchange's total market capitalization at the end of July. A successful IPO for Meitu, which was valued at US$ 3.8 billion after a round of fundraising this year, could make Hong Kong more attractive as a listing location.

Meitu has been in the beautification business since 2008, when founder Cai Wensheng launched online photo editing service MeituPic. MeituPic boasts over 500 million users as of October 2015, according to Meitu's website. Cai launched BeautyCam, an app aimed at selfies, in 2013. BeautyCam users can chase Chinese beauty standards by widening their eyes, erasing blemishes and even lightening their skin.

Meitu's other photo and video apps include BeautyPlus, which allows users to edit their appearances in selfie videos, and MakeupPlus, which allows users to test out various virtual makeup looks. Video editing platform Meipai has over 265 million daily views, according to Meitu's website.

Meitu had over 446 million active monthly users and over 1.1 billion devices worldwide had downloaded Meitu software as of June 30, the company's IPO application said. But over 95 percent of revenues came from Meitu-branded phones in the first half of this year. Meitu phones, built by phone maker FIH Mobile, come with high-definition cameras to create the ultimate selfie-snapping experience.

Despite the success of its mobile phones, Meitu's recent finances don't paint such a pretty picture. The company has posted operating losses since 2014. All of Meitu's apps are free to download, meaning that little of the company's earnings can be sourced directly to its millions of app users. Unless Meitu can brush up on its fundraising savvy, its IPO dreams could prove too beautiful to be true.
