Today and next Monday again I'm going to be talking about the history or if you will, the geo-history of U.S. presidential campaigns and elections
That's a lot to cover
I hope today to get up to about 1900 but bear with me if I don't, especially if you have questions which you may will have. we may get a little bit delay
In thinking over the history U.S. presidential elections. I've been thinking sort of take-home messages for today's election

What's sort of the connections can we see
One thing we may know is that financial panics are very often followed by a change in party or at least, they often have electoral consequences
That certainly happened with the panic of 1837
Not quite as much as the panic of 1873, panic of 1893 definitely and of course 1929 absolutely
Another thing we may note is that U.S. presidential campaigns have often been very vigorous if you will
One way to think about this is they used to be nasty brutish and short. Now they are nasty brutish and long
we'll look at it. Well, for example, today for all the problems we have
We don't have partisans following candidates and hackling them with infantile little rhymes as happened in 1884
