710 million Chinese citizens, or 51.7 percent of China’s population, use the internet as of June 2016. That percentage might seem low. But a new report from the China Internet Network Information Center, or CNNIC, tells a different story. Twenty-first century Chinese are going online at striking speeds, and their internet use habits are changing fast as well.
CNNIC released its 38th “Statistical Report on Internet Development in China” on August 3rd. The report showed that China has gained 21 million new internet users since the end of 2015. Almost three-quarters of China’s internet users were under the age of 40, with users between 10 and 19 years of age accounting for more than 20% of the total. The average Chinese internet user spends 3.8 hours on the internet every day.

What are Chinese netizens doing on their computers for four hours a day? As it turns out, many of them aren’t using computers at all. 656 million Chinese citizens, or over 90 percent of Chinese internet users, now use their cell phones to go online. About one-quarter of China’s internet users exclusively use smartphones to access the internet.
CNNIC data showed that 603 million people, or 92 percent of China’s mobile internet users, use instant messaging apps like WeChat or QQ. Other popular app categories include news websites, online broadcasts, music or video streaming apps, and internet finance tools. The mobile app category that showed the most striking growth was online food delivery, with carry-out orders surging 38.1 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2016. According to the report’s analysis, growing disposable incomes among China’s urban middle class have piqued China’s appetite for carry-out.
But not all twenty-first century Chinese are glued to their screens. CNNIC’s report shows a striking divide between city and countryside, with internet usage rates in rural China lagging urban rates by over 35 percentage points. 68 percent of the rural residents surveyed in the report said that a lack of technical knowledge prevents them from going online. CNNIC executive Liu Xin told Xinhua reporters that outreach and education efforts will be necessary to close the online urban-rural divide.
