第三課 關注自己的事業
In 1974, Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's, was asked to speak to the MBA class at the University of Texas at Austin.
1974年，麥當勞的創始人雷·克羅克，被邀請去奧斯汀為得克薩斯州立大學的MBA班作演講。
A dear friend of mine was a student in that MBA class.
我的一個好朋友正是這個班上的一名學生。
After a powerful and inspiring talk, the class adjourned and the students asked Ray if he would join them at their favorite hangout to have a few beers.
在一場激動人心的講演之后，學生們問雷是否愿意去他們常去的地方一起喝杯啤酒。
Ray graciously accepted.
雷高興地接受了邀請。
"What business am I in?" Ray asked, once the group had all their beers in hand.
每個人都拿到了啤酒，這時雷問："誰能告訴我我是做什么的？"
Everyone laughed. Most of the MBA students thought Ray was just fooling around.
當時每個人都笑了，大多數學生都認為雷是在開玩笑。
No one answered, so Ray asked the question again, "What business do you think I'm in?"
見沒人回答他的問題，于是雷又問："你們認為我是做什么的呢？"
The students laughed again, and finally one brave soul yelled out,

"Ray, who in the world doesn't know that you're in the hamburger business?"

Ray chuckled. "That's what I thought you would say."

He paused and then quickly said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm not in the hamburger business.

My business is real estate."
我真正的生意是房地產。"
McDonald's today is the largest single owner of real estate in the world, owning even more than the Catholic church.
