Tension is high in the tech world today, as Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies prepares to do legal battle with Samsung and T-Mobile.
Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer by revenue, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung’s Chinese subsidiaries. A company spokesperson told Caixin that Huawei has brought Samsung to court in the city of Quanzhou in Fujian province.
Both Huawei and Samsung declined to comment on the specifics of the suit, but a local newspaper got the scoop. On July 5, the Southeastern Morning Post reported that the Quanzhou Intermediate People’s Court had accepted Huawei’s suit against five companies, including three of Samsung’s Chinese units. Huawei accused Samsung of unlawfully using patented technologies in 16 different Samsung products, including the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy J5 smartphones. The paper also reported that Huawei is seeking 80 million yuan, or about 12 million dollars, in compensation.

The Huawei-Samsung suit is the latest in a string of patent lawsuits that Huawei has recently brought against its foreign rivals. Huawei also sued Samsung this May, both in the city of Shenzhen, where Huawei is headquartered, and across the Pacific in a San Francisco federal court. The suits accused Samsung of poaching patented 4G technology, operating systems, and user interface software.
And just this week, Huawei brought T-Mobile to court for allegedly violating 14 different patents related to 4G technology. Huawei says that it offered to let T-Mobile use its technology under “fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms,” but the network refused and used the technology illegally.
Despite Huawei’s recent fierceness in the courtroom, a market analyst predicts the two companies will eventually reach a settlement because Samsung is an important parts supplier for Huawei.
