He was elected Arkansas Attorney General in 1976 and Governor of Arkansas in 1978. His first term as a governor encountered great troubles. Many of his reforms were strongly rejected. He was defeated in 1980 re-election and spent most of the next two years working on his re-election campaign. Clinton was again elected governor in 1982 and kept his job for ten years until he became President of USA in 1992.

Bill Clinton was elected President on November 3, 1992, and was re-elected in November, 1996. During his two terms as president, Clinton managed to realize the longest period of peace-time economic expansion in American history, which included a balanced budget and a federal surplus of $559 billion. Meanwhile, he had encountered many troubles, was involved in a series of scandals such as Whitewater controversy, Lewinsky scandal, etc. and was impeached for obstruction of justice, but was subsequently acquitted by the U.S. Senate.

After his presidency, Clinton has been committed to public speaking and humanitarian work. He established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the stated mission to "strengthen the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. The Foundation focuses on four critical areas: health security, economic empowerment，leadership development and citizen service, and racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation.
卸任后，克林頓一直致力于公開演講和人道主義工作。他成立了威廉克林頓 基金，以"加強全世界人民應(yīng)對全球性挑戰(zhàn)互相依賴的能力"為使命。該基金會將重 點放在四個重要領(lǐng)域：健康保障、經(jīng)濟地位、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力培養(yǎng)與公民服務(wù)、以及民族、種族與宗教和解。
On May 6，2009, Bill Clinton was presented the Harry S. Truman Award for Public Service for his public contributions before, within, and after his presidency.
