Oksana Chusovitma, a veteran of five Olympics who won a team gold medal in 1992 with the Unified Team of athletes from the former Soviet Union, earned an individual silver medal on August 17,2008 when she did two sturdy vaults.

Her 9-year-old son, Alisher, is in recovery from leukemia, the illness that brought Chusovitina to Germany six years ago. It is because of that illness that Chusovitina competes for Germany instead of her native Uzbekistan. And gymnastics helped save Alisher’s life.

Chusovitina is unusual among the ponytailed sprites who dominate the sport. She has short hair and straight bangs. Her leotards aren’t sparkly or in pastel pinks or purples; she prefers daiicer colors.

And she is not finished, according to what she said Sunday, silver medal in hand. “I could go to London in 2012,” she said. “I will only be 37.”

In 2002 she and her husband, wrestler Bakhodir Kurpanov, were competing at the Asian Games in South Korea when her mother called to say Alisher was sick.

When Chusovitina returned home, it was to find out he had leukemia.

“If I don’t compete, then my son won’t live, it’s as simple as that’ said Chusovitina at the time. “My son underwent an operation today, and the only reason he managed to get that treatment is because I am earning money. I have no choice,”

Seeking advanced medical treatment for their son, Chusovitina and her husband accepted an offer of help from Shanna and Peter Brttggemann, head coaches of the Toyota Cologne club, and moved to Germany. With prize money earned from gymnastics competitions, along with the help of the Brflggemanns and members of the international gymnastics community who fundraised and donated to the cause,Chusovitina was able to secure treatment for Alisher at tiie University of Cologne’s hospital. While Alisher underwent treatment in Cologne, Chusovi-tina trained with the German team.

No matter how much her legs screamed or back ached, she couldn’t stop. Her son was dying; she had no insurance, so she couldn’t stop. The medical bills were stacked to the sky, and she had no money.

Uzbekistan released Chusovitina to compete for Germany in 2003. However, due to rules requiring three years of residency, she was unable to gain German citizenship immediately. From 2003 to 2006 she trained in Germany but continued to compete for Uzbekistan, representing Aem at the 2003 md 2005 World Cham-pionships and the 2004 Olympics. In 2003, thirteen years after her World Championships debut, Chusovitina won the gold medal on the vault at that year’s World Championships in Anaheim.

In 2006, Chusovitina obtained German citizenship. Her first competition for Germany was the 2006 World Championships, where she won a bronze medal on the vault and placed ninth in the all-around.

Healthy now, Alisher excels at gymnastics, according to Chusovitina’s coach, Shaima Poljakova.

Although Chusovitina is most comfortable speaking Russian, she did interviews Sunday in German that was translated to English.

She feels like an 18-year-old, Chusovitina said,and the silver medal felt wonderful.
