There was a gasp, a murmur of astonishment and horror; a young girl screamed; standing on a chair to get a better view some one upset two test-tubes full of spermatozoa.
人們倒抽了一口氣，發出一陣驚愕和恐怖的低語；一個姑娘尖叫起來；一個人站到椅子上，想看得更清楚，卻打翻了兩根滿裝精子的試管。
Bloated, sagging, and among those firm youthful bodies, those undistorted faces, a strange and terrifying monster of middle-agedness, Linda advanced into the room, coquettishly smiling her broken and discoloured smile, and rolling as she walked, with what was meant to be a voluptuous undulation, her enormous haunches.
在那些青春矯健的身子和沒有歪扭的面孔之間出現了一個離奇可怕的中年的妖怪，面目浮腫、肌肉松弛——是琳妲走進了房間。她賣弄風情地微笑著，那微笑退了色，七零八碎。她走路時滾動著她那巨大的臀部，卻自以為是腰肢款擺，冶蕩迷人。
Bernard walked beside her.
伯納走在她的身邊。
"There he is," he said, pointing at the Director.
“他就在那兒?！辈{指著主任說。
"Did you think I didn't recognize him?" Linda asked indignantly; then, turning to the Director, Of course I knew you; Tomakin, I should have known you anywhere, among a thousand.
“你以為我會認不出他呀？”琳妲極為氣憤地問，然后便轉身對著主任，我當然認得出你，湯瑪金，我到哪兒都能認得出你，在一千個人里也認得出你。
But perhaps you've forgotten me.
可你也許忘記了我。
Don't you remember? Don't you remember, Tomakin? Your Linda.
你不記得了嗎？不記得我了嗎，湯瑪金？我是你的琳妲。
She stood looking at him, her head on one side, still smiling, but with a smile that became progressively, in face of the Director's expression of petrified disgust, less and less selfconfident, that wavered and finally went out.
她站在那兒望著他，歪著頭微笑著。可那微笑面對著主任那呆板的、厭惡的臉色，逐漸失去了自信，猶豫了，終于消失了。
"Don't you remember, Tomakin?" she repeated in a voice that trembled.
“你想不起來了嗎，湯瑪金？”北重復道，聲音顫抖著。
Her eyes were anxious, agonized.
她的眼光焦急而痛苦。
The blotched and sagging face twisted grotesquely into the grimace of extreme grief.
那骯臟松弛的臉奇異地扭曲了、變做了極端凄慘的怪笑。
"Tomakin!" She held out her arms.
“湯瑪金！”她伸出雙臂。
Some one began to titter.
有人“哧”地一聲笑了出來。
"What's the meaning," began the Director, "of this monstrous …"
“這是什么意思？”主任說話了，“這個嚇人的……”
"Tomakin!" She ran forward, her blanket trailing behind her, threw her arms round his neck, hid her face on his chest.
“湯馮金！”她向他跑來，毛氈拖在身后，伸出雙臂摟住了他的脖子，把臉埋在他的胸前。
A howl of laughter went up irrepressibly.
無法抑制的哈哈大笑爆發了出來。
"… this monstrous practical joke," the Director shouted.
“……這種惡作劇太不像話！”主任大叫道。
Red in the face, he tried to disengage himself from her embrace.
他滿臉通紅，想掙脫她的擁抱。
Desperately she clung.
可她卻死命地摟緊了他。
"But I'm Linda, I'm Linda."'The laughter drowned her voice.
“可我是琳妲，我是琳妲?！惫笮ρ蜎]了她的話。
"You made me have a baby," she screamed above the uproar.
“你讓我懷了個孩子，”她的尖叫壓倒了哄堂大笑，
There was a sudden and appalling hush; eyes floated uncomfortably, not knowing where to look.
帶來了突然的令人駭然的寂靜；大家的目光狼狽，閃爍游移，不知道往什么地方看好。
