On the morning of January 5, a bus in the capital city of Ningxia region went on fire.

And it has emerged that it was a deliberate arson attack.

Police have caught the man behind the attack, which has killed at least 17 people and injured 32.
警方隨即將嫌犯逮捕，事件至少造成17人死亡，32人受傷。
The arsonist, named Ma Yongping, was a 33-year-old migrant worker from a nearby city, Shizuishan, who worked on a construction site in Yinchuan.
縱火嫌疑人為33歲石嘴山人馬永平，目前在銀川建筑工地攬工。
Ma was arrested around 4:30 PM the same day on top of a building in the same area that the incident occured.
當天下午4:30，馬永平在某工地樓頂被警方抓獲。
After threatening to jump off the building, he eventually surrendered, Xinhua News Agency said.

So what was the motif behind the attack?

No attack on the public is justifiable, but Ma’s reasoning appears even less so.

It had emerged that the 33-year old had posted on WeChat that he was angry because a contractor he worked for had promised to give him an apartment as payment, but the promised apartment turned out to be an unfinished, abandoned building.

This, Ma said, led him to take “drastic actions to seek revenge on society”.

Ma’s post did not mention an arson attack, but he said he was willing to die to defend his rights.

According to government statement, Ma, having lit up the bus on fire with two containers of gas he bought at a gas station, proceeded to escape through a window.

An Yinchuan government spokesman said that there happened to be a fire-brigade nearby who put out the fire within five minutes, but many people were unable to escape the bus, which is why the death toll was so high.

Six of the injured people are in intensive care at Ningxia Medical University hospital.
