on why we're better in games than we are in real life.
而我讀博士研究的課題就是“為什么我們覺得虛擬游戲世界比現實世界更好”
And this is a problem that a lot of gamers have.
同時這也是一個很多游戲玩家的難題
We feel that we are not as good in reality as we are in games.
我們感覺自己無法像在游戲中一樣適應現實生活
And I don't mean just good as in successful,
我不認為適應就是成功,二者不是等價的
although that's part of it.
縱然適應是成功的一部分
We do achieve more in game worlds. But I also
我們確實在游戲世界中收獲更多的成功
mean good as in
但是這里所說的適應
motivated to do something that matters,
就是指去做緊要事情的內在動力、
inspired to collaborate and to cooperate.
激起合作的靈感以及協作
And when we're in game worlds
當我們處于游戲世界時
I believe that many of us become
我覺得我們可以做最好的自己
the best version of ourselves, the most likely to help at a moment's notice,
這時看到一個消息我們就會去幫助別人
the most likely to stick with a problem
并且會持之以恒的解決一個問題
as long at it takes, to get up after failure and try again.
面對挫折我們會勇敢得站起來,并且繼續奮斗
And in real life, when we face failure,

when we confront obstacles, we often don't feel that way.
當我們遭遇障礙的時候,我們通常就不會那么感覺了
We feel overcome,

we feel overwhelmed,
很壓抑、不知所措、
we feel anxious, maybe depressed, frustrated or cynical.

We never have those feelings when we're playing games,

they just don't exist in games.

So, that's what I wanted to study

when I was a graduate student.

What about games makes it impossible
游戲能否讓我們覺得,
to feel that we can't achieve everything?
做不成任何事情是不可能的呢?
How can we take those feelings from games
我們怎么才能把從游戲中獲得的這種感覺
and apply them to real-world work?
轉移到現實社會的工作中呢
So, I looked at games like World of Warcraft,
因此,我研究了一些像《魔獸世界》這樣的游戲
which is really the ideal collaborative problem-solving environment.
它們正是理想的解決協作問題的平臺
And I started to notice a few things

that make epic wins so possible in online worlds.

So, the first thing is whenever you show up in one of these online games,

especially in World of Warcraft,

there are lots and lots of different characters

who are willing to trust you with a world-saving mission, right away.

But not just any mission, it's a mission that is perfectly matched

with your current level in the game. Right?

So, you can do it.

They never give you a challenge that you can't achieve.

But it is on the verge of what you're capable of. So, you have to try hard,

but there's no unemployment in World of Warcraft.

There is no sitting around wringing your hands,

there's always something specific and important to be done.

And there are also tons of collaborators.

Everywhere you go, hundreds of thousands of people

to achieve your epic mission.

That's not something that we have in real life that easily,
在現實生活中就沒有這么輕松了
this sense that at our fingertips
這種在我們指尖間就有成千上萬合作伙伴的感覺
are tons of collaborators.
在現實生活中就沒有這么簡單了
And also there is this epic story, this inspiring story
在游戲中會有美妙的故事情節,而這些情節
of why we're there, and what we're doing.
吸引了我們,并且激勵著我們的所作所為
And then we get all this positive feedback.
同時,對于我們所做出的任何努力都會有一個積極肯定的回應
You guys have heard of leveling up and plus-one strength,
你們肯定聽說過等級提升,
and plus-one intelligence.

We don't get that kind of constant feedback in real life.
而我們在現實生活中就沒有這種持續的回饋
When I get off this stage I'm not going to have

plus-one speaking, and plus-one crazy idea,

plus-20 crazy idea.

I don't get that feedback in real life.

Now, the problem with collaborative online environments
在網絡虛擬環境中,
like World of Warcraft
比如《魔獸世界》
is that it's so satisfying
和別人協作是一件非常愜意的事情
to be on the verge of an epic win all the time
因為我們可以不停得向最終的勝利沖擊
that we decide to spend all our time in these game worlds.
也正是因為如此我們才會一直沉醉于游戲世界中
It's just better than reality.
因為它比現實更好
So, so far, collectively all the World of Warcraft gamers

have spent 5.93 million years

solving the virtual problems of Azeroth.
